Pros and Cons of Open Office

Downloading Open Office to your computer can save you at least a hundred dollars on purchasing Microsoft Office. It could save you much more than that, depending on the specific programs and features you need for your computer and whether you are a business, personal, school or non-profit user. However, Open Office, the free office suite software offered by Sun Microsystems is not the best choice of office software for all users. Depending on your needs, Microsoft Office may be the better choice.

Open Office is free of charge to all users. Developers constantly update and tweak the functionalities of Open Office’s programs, and it gets better with each version. Open Office’s programs are similar in feature and function to many Microsoft Office programs. They include Writer for text documents, Calc for spreadsheets, impress for slide show presentations, draw for creating drawings, Math for a calculator and formulas and Base for databases.

One pro of Open Office is that it is compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris and Free BSD. This makes it easy to download and use for almost any operating system. Another plus of Open Office is that you can download it at one time. You don’t have to download individual programs. Open Office documents can also be saved as files that Microsoft Office programs can read. This enables you to send or receive a file created in Open Office without worrying over whether it can be read. You can also easily export the file as a PDF without having to install extra conversion software. If you want to build a web page using a presentation or a drawing, you only need to click File>Export.

Today, the PC is often still considered just a tool, but together we need to make it a lot more than that. We need to make it a path to experiences.

Drawbacks to Open Office are many, however, for many users. For example, it does not offer all of the same functionalities as Microsoft Office. This can be particularly irritating for business users who need the advanced statistical and analytical features of Microsoft Office. Another downside to Open Office is that it takes a significant amount of memory and CPU time to operate. It is thus much slower than Microsoft Office. However, each new release of Open Office seems to take less time to perform the same functions as Microsoft Office. Open Office also does not offer nearly as many fonts in all of its programs as Microsoft Office. Support for Open Office is also limited compared to Microsoft Office. Since it is a free suite of software, the only support is available from other users and developers. Getting and finding the help you need when you need it can be a bit difficult.

Home computer users will likely find that Open Office will meet their needs nicely. They can avoid having to pay for Microsoft Office licenses. Learning to use Open Office may take some time if they are used to working with Microsoft Office. Business users will likely want to stick with using Microsoft Office for its advanced features and support offerings. The reasons you use office software will ultimately dictate which office program suite you use.

One of the hottest new career fields is the world of telemarketing. Depending on the position or the company, you might work at a dedicated call center or work from your own home. Telemarketers typically work in a sales-related field, taking orders from customers. Telemarketing actually involves four different types of work: lead generation, sales, inbound work and outbound work.

Inbound jobs are one of the easiest tasks because you do not make any calls yourself. With inbound calls, you work at a call center for a major retailer or company. Companies that use the inbound system include credit card companies, department stores and mail-order retailers. When you page through a catalogue or look at a store’s website, check the toll-free number associated with phone orders. When you call that number, you reach a worker that accepts your order. Working in an inbound job means that you accept the call from the customer, input that information into the computer and process the order. You never make any calls on behalf of the company because the customers call the toll-free number.

Outbound calls are completely different because these jobs require that you make the calls yourself. You might work for a hospital or mechanic that attempts to collect debts owed by past customers. You might work for a newspaper or magazine company that solicits orders over the phone. Some charitable organizations call people at random to gain donations for the organization.

If people like you, they’ll listen to you, but if they trust you they’ll do business with you.

Sales jobs are another form of telemarketing. The point of sales jobs is to get potential customers to place an order within minutes after you call. Depending on the position, you either cold call customers or work from an established list. With cold calling, you contact random people in the hopes of turning those people into customers. When you work with an established list, you only contact those that expressed interest in making a purchase in the past.

Telemarketing also includes something referred to as lead generation. With lead generation, you focus on getting sales leads for a specific company. This involves cold calling customers and convincing those people that the company you work for is the best. Stock brokers, retailers of diet products and mail order companies often use lead generation specialists. You do not make any direct sales yourself, but rather find people willing to discuss making a purchase later. The jobs typically pay a set amount based on each lead that you find. Some companies pay you based on the sales that person makes later. You can make quite a bit by finding the best possible leads.

Telemarketing positions usually do not require much experience in the field. Even if you never worked as a telemarketer before, you can still find a good-paying job. When you apply for the job, focus on the sales and customer service related aspects of your previous jobs. Companies that hire telemarketers want employees that can make sales, but also people that have experience working over the phone or working directly with customers. By emphasizing your past customer service roles, you can help yourself land that job.

In today’s computer driven world, more jobs are playing into the sedentary lifestyle that defines modern America. However, there are still jobs that get people up and moving and can even help people stay in shape.

Being a chef is a fast-paced and energetic career that any active, food-minded person may enjoy. To get a good job in this field, job training and certification from a culinary program is essential.

Parks and Recreation/Landscaping Jobs

If you enjoy being outside and working with plants, these jobs may be ideal for you. They do require a fair amount of physical labor, so a strong back is a must. You can expect to use heavy machinery for mowing and cleaning landscapes and planting flowers and shrubs to beautify yards and parks.

Don’t pick a job with great vacation time. Pick one that doesn’t need escaping.

These jobs provide an opportunity to be outside in the fresh air while using your hands or bodies in a much more active way than the typical office job. These are ideal jobs for people who would feel too restless and pent up by doing a sedentary job that keeps them tied to a computer all day.
