When searching for a job, most people consider location to be an important factor. Driving an undesirably long distance to work can be a major disadvantage; more gas is required, and the commute can cause one to waste valuable time driving. It’s a known fact that having a long drive to work has more cons than pros, however, a less known fact is that having too short of a commute to work can actually be a disadvantage. While there are multiple advantages to having such a short and easy commute, the disadvantages should not be ignored.
It’s Just Five Minutes Away
The “It’s just…” syndrome can occur often when the commute to work is only five minutes long. Individuals may find themselves being late to work more than often because “It’s just five minutes away” and who needs to get up an hour before work when it’s only five minutes away? This state of mind may also cause multiple trips home; not only for lunch, but for little things during the day. “It’s only five minutes away…I’ll just run home and…” Such an attitude result in low productivity and angry bosses.
I can walk to work!
When it comes to transportation, having a five-minute commute to work can be both good and bad. Depending on location, individuals with a five-minute commute to work may find that they don’t need to spend money on a car, buses, or taxis. Of course, not having a car and or transportation can backfire if the weather is bad. Walking to work on a beautiful, sunny, warm day can be fantastic, but walking to work through a blizzard is a different story. Furthermore, if one has to take “homework” to and from the office, not having a transportation may turn out to be a real hassle.
The goal isn’t more money. The goal is living life on your terms.
I save so much money…
While the aforementioned negatives of not having reliable transportation are relevant, being able to walk to work has its advantages. Individuals will be able to save a ton of money not having to pay for gas, car payments, or bus and or taxi fares.
I’ll run home and grab that!
While running home too often can be very bad, it can also come in handy if something is forgotten at home. Furthermore, individuals may find that the convenience of running home for lunch is not only easier, but it can save an abidance of money on not having to spend to eat out on a daily basis.
While being five minutes to work has its pros and cons, it’s almost always better than having an extremely long commute to work. The important thing is to be careful not to abuse the privilege of living so close to work.
