The School Is an Attractive Employer for Students

College students who need to find work should begin by looking for a job on their school campus. There are hundreds of positions necessary to provide students with the services they need, and current students are some of the best resources for filling those positions. Make sure your resume highlights the number of semesters you have been a student at the school and how your degree program has given you special insight into the type of job you are applying for.

Work-Study Options

Most colleges and universities offer work specifically for students who demonstrate a financial need. These jobs usually pay a little better than minimum wage, but they can also offer special discounts on school-related items such as housing or textbooks. Since you have to be a student in order to qualify for these jobs, they are perfect for helping ends meet while you are attending classes. Talk to someone in your school’s administrative offices about the details of the jobs at your campus. There are generally a wide range of different positions available depending on your schedule and past work experience. Check on work study programs as early in the semester as possible because these jobs tend to be filled pretty quickly once school starts.

Students Already Spending Time at School

One of the reasons a student is a good fit for a school-related job is that students already spend the majority of their time on campus. A student worker has a better chance of reporting to work reliably and on time because there is very little travel involved in getting to the job location. Working at school is convenient for students because they do not have to burn any gasoline or spend extra time commuting to work when the work is already on campus.

Students make excellent school employees because they are already familiar with the school. Students know where all of the buildings are, and most students understand what each building’s purpose is. Current students are generally aware of the school’s administrative structure, which makes it easier for them to fit into the jobs that require a more intimate knowledge of how the school works. A student’s familiarity with the school is a definite benefit for the school employer, and it also helps the student acclimate to the new job more quickly than someone who has never been on campus.

Existing Relationships can Help

If a student has attended the school for more than one semester, there is a good chance that they already have some connections with administrative personnel on campus. A student can use past professors and other important relationships to build a good resume with powerful references. Since the references are people who already work for the school, the hiring process can be streamlined because the people doing the hiring will be familiar with the people listed as references on the student’s resume. Students who have a good reputation with instructors and other school officials will have an easier time finding work at the school.

Tips for Securing an Internship at Google

An internship at Google is something many people apply for and something that very few actually manage to get. Google is renowned world-wide for how they treat their employees, for their employee-friendly facilities and unique methods of fostering workplace teamwork. The salary isn’t bad either. Google accepts student interns from many disciplines, be it Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Advanced Mathematics, Physics and a considerable number of other subjects. Students who have any amount of experience in multiple fields are recommended to apply because of the diverse way Google operates.

At a Google internship, you’ll learn how one of the largest companies in the world operates. You’ll be expected to perform for at least three months’ worth of full-time work.

Needless to say, Google internships are not the easiest things in the world to land. There’s a few simple things that you can do in order to improve your chances that you’ll get one if you can successfully make it to the interview stage.Remember to be confident above all else. Don’t ever panic. One of the people who interviews interns as his job posted that he likes to ask questions to potential interns simply to see if they’ll get nervous or otherwise “freak out.” In order to understand why this happens, you must first know that Google has a very high turn away rate and an even higher “false negative” rate.

Thus, the need for confidence arises. If you’ve made it to the interview portion of trying to get an internship with Google, you’re likely qualified. If you get asked a math question or something that you might not have the slightest clue about, try to answer it anyway. If you don’t know what the answer is, talk about how good you are at learning what’s required for the job and then talk about your grades if the question applies to a subject. If you’re in an interview for an internship at Google, and this can’t be said enough, you’re likely more than qualified already because you’ve got your foot in the door. So, all you need to do is prove it.

I’m doing an internship, so I’m not getting paid. But the experience of meeting artists and working with record companies is priceless.

There are also two things that you never want to do: Never tell the interviewer what is important for their company and never tell the person interviewing you how to conduct the process. Those are two marks that will instantly earn you strikes. The person interviewing you already works for the company and furthermore, unless they ask you for your opinion, they already know what their company needs. It makes sense when you think about it, but you wouldn’t believe how many people make these mistakes in an interview.

The only other real big thing you need to make sure you’re able to answer is a few questions about how data structures and such work. If “Computer Science” is on your resume, you’ll likely be expected to know about any number of general theories. Just knowing general theories is generally enough to get you by with an interviewer. The last word of wisdom is that if you fail and get turned down for your Google internship position, don’t feel discouraged. Re-apply in six months and try again because you may have just gotten an interviewer that didn’t like you or you may have been having a bad day.
