A job search can absolutely destroy self-confidence when doors seem to be closing everywhere you turn. You begin to feel uncertainty creep in, but it is something that you must fight. The job market is a tough place to be because there are only a few jobs but hundreds of applicants. There are things that you can do to fight uncertainty in order to continue the job search for the perfect position. So, what to do when feeling uncertain?
It takes a lot of stamina to hunt for a job. Take a breath every now and then to assure that you will not become too absorbed in the search. When people absorb themselves so much into one thing, it can overtake the senses and impair judgment. Search as much as possible, but do not apply to every available job if it is likely something that you do not want to do. Search for a new job every other day instead of everyday to take a breather in between. This helps you stay far more focused on things and keeps uncertainty from creeping into the scenario.
Prepare each day for the job search. Plan activities the night before so that it does not become too overwhelming. For instance, decide the night before whether you will search for jobs online or visit different places of business to submit applications. Take a day or two to look over the resume to make certain everything is in order. The resume is the first impression that many places of employment have of potential employees. Prepare well for interviews as well. All of these activities will help ease the uncertainty of job searching.
Live life for the moment because everything else is uncertain!
Keep everything in perspective. There are only so many things that you can do in order to get the job. Once it is out of your control it is time to let go and relax. It is alright to contact companies where you have submitted resumes and applications. In fact, that is encouraged. What you should not do is worry obsessively over whether you got the job. Never put all your eggs in one basket. It is rare that a job is captured when only submitting one application or resume. Do not wait for a call from one place. Submit many applications and resumes so the choices are varied. Waiting on one particular place to contact you sets yourself up for a fight with uncertainty.
Insecurities are readily available during a job search. There are many “what if’s” that you can ask yourself. Do not overburden your senses to the point that you cannot discern from what is and what is not in your control. Companies that are looking for employees have a difficult job because they are choosing from the most elite candidates available. They will hire someone for the position. Since they have so many choices, there is a huge chance that there will be some jobs you will not get. That is when it is time to dig in your heels and become more determined.
