Should You Hold a Job While Studying?

There are many arguments, both pro and con, regarding holding a job while going to school. Below, several of the advantages and disadvantages are examined in detail.

Some advantages to working while studying:

  • You’ll gain experience in the real world, maybe even in your field of study if you get a paid internship as a job. Interns are frequently hired by the company after graduation.
  • You may not have to borrow as much in student loans if you work while attending college, so you’ll have less of a loan debt after graduating. Some students who work are able to avoid student loans completely.
  • You’ll have extra spending money for eating, going out, socializing, or getting new clothes. You’ll also have more money if something unexpected happens, such as a major car repair or a rent increase.
  • You’ll seem more mature and responsible if you are able to show on your resume that you worked during college. It could help you land your dream job.

Of course, there are also some disadvantages to working while studying:

  • You might not be able to take as many credits per term, so it could take longer to graduate. Some students work full-time and go to school part-time.
  • If your classes are extremely challenging, you won’t have as much time to study. Your grades might be lower than if you were able to put all of your time into your classes.
  • You can focus completely on your courses, which might be less stressful than working while studying. You’ll have more leisure time and won’t feel like you’re spread too thin.

Study while others are sleeping; work while others are loafing; prepare while others are playing; and dream while others are wishing.

The list of advantages is somewhat longer than the disadvantages. In most cases, working at least part-time while attending school is beneficial. With the costs of tuition and books increasing every year, working can make a noticeable difference in the amount of student loan debt at graduation. Additionally, anything that can increase a new graduate’s likelihood of finding a job is almost a necessity in the current tough economy. Having the self-discipline to hold down a job and keep up with you class work is a good training for the corporate world, and the majority of the people looking at your resume will be impressed.

Investing in Mom Power

Stay-at-home moms might not have as much business experience to put on a resume as they would like, but they can list plenty of practical experience based on their work raising their children. A mom has to handle raising kids, keeping the house clean, cooking for the family, and all of the other little tasks that keep everyone’s life running smoothly day in and day out. When a mom is ready to get back out into the business world, she can use the work she has done at home to enhance her resume.

Specialized Skills

Being at home with the children gives a mom the opportunity to pursue interests that she might not have looked into if she were working full time away from home. A mom who spends several hours each day communicating through social networking websites can list that on a resume as computer literacy. She is probably also a fast and accurate typist, which can help with some potential jobs outside her home. Any special hobbies that a mom enjoys could translate into marketable skills depending on the kind of job she is looking for.

Expert at Multi-Tasking

A mother’s work is rarely linear. Most moms have to deal with several jobs at the same time. A mom who is looking for work could comfortably list multi-tasking as one of the many skills she has picked up by working in her house. If a mom can handle cooking dinner, helping with homework, talking on the phone, and keeping the dog out of the trash can all at the same time there is a good chance she can handle several phone lines at once when she is sitting at a busy desk.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

An important part of being a parent is knowing how to say what needs to be said in such a way that it gets through to the kids. In a household with more than one child, negotiation skills are vital to keeping the peace. A mom develops good communication skills as soon as her child begins to talk. She continues to hone those skills as the child grows, with the greatest challenges coming as the kids reach their teenage years. It is perfectly fine to list those hard-won communication skills in a resume. Sometimes real-life experience is more complex than the negotiations that might come up in a business setting.

Home Organization Translates to the Workplace

A big part of being a mother is keeping track of everyone’s schedule. A mom has to make sure all the kids get to their appointments on time, the pantry is stocked appropriately, and so on. The organization skills that are necessary at home are the same organization skills needed in the workplace. A good resume should include the practical organization and attention to detail that a mother develops them as part of her everyday life. Employers are always looking for someone who can manage time efficiently and be productive. Being a mom is excellent training for the workplace.

Time for Spring Cleaning

When you think about the word spring, your mind automatically goes to images of blossoming flowers, light rain and fields filled with wildflowers. Before you start running through the hills and singing, you should stop and think about spring cleaning. Most people remember to clean out their house during the spring months, donating items to charities and removing the trash that piled up during the winter. While cleaning your house is always helpful, so is cleaning your office space. Spring is the perfect time to clean out your desk or work area and get rid of all the old and outdated things.

During the winter, you naturally feel a little run down and have less energy than you do during the warmer months. Instead of throwing things in the trash can, you tuck things inside the desk. You might plan to clean out your desk later, but later never comes. The warmer temperatures that come during spring give you the chance to clean out your desk and encourage your co-workers to do the same thing. This lets you stay healthy and get rid of the funk that plagues your office during the winter.

Start by setting up trash bins around the office. Label the bins for different types of materials, including paper, metal and miscellaneous items. You can recycle paper and metal to make money for the whole office. Once you fill a bin, place the junk to one side and fill a second trash bag. Take the items to a local recycling center, and trade in those objects for cash. Use the cash that you make by recycling to treat your co-workers to an office party or lunch away from the office. You might be surprised at how much recyclable trash you have sitting inside your desks.

I believe that  cleaning and organizing is a process – and a practice – not a project.

Go through each drawer or space in your desk carefully. Make separate piles for things that you need to keep, documents that need filing and items that are trash. Remove everything from your desk and arrange those items into the stacks or piles. Once your drawers are completely empty, wipe out the insides with a high-quality cleaner. After the cleaner dries, carefully arrange everything back inside with a filing system. You should also take time to remove anything you have on top of your desk. Clean the surface of your desk with a good cleanser.

Most office workers do not realize the number of germs circulating through the space. Make sure that everyone cleans their mouse and keyboard with an antibacterial or disinfectant cleaner that removes any germs or bacteria. Spring cleaning is the perfect time to clean out the kitchen space, break room or any other shared spaces. Cleanse the surfaces with antibacterial cleaners that kill any germs. You can also open any windows in the office. The fresh spring air that sweeps through removes any funky or unusual smells from the space, making your work area not only look better, but smell better too. When you feel better about your work space, you might find yourself working harder.
