Do you really have to work so much?

Perfecting your resume is a good idea. Resumes are extremely important in today’s job market, probably more important than they have ever been. If you’re wondering why that is, it’s simple. Just like in the housing market there are buyer’s markets and seller’s markets, in the employment market there are employee’s markets and employer’s markets.

An employee’s market is when companies are desperate for hires. This happens when economies take off, usually because of the domino effect. One industry sees job growth and it leads to another industry needing more employees, and so on it goes.

Employer’s markets, which is what we are in right now, are the opposite. Because the economy is poor, there are dozens of applicants for each job listing. Companies get to pick and choose amongst a wide range of applicants, and this is why a resume is so important today.

But Do I Really Have To Work So Much?

Despite it being an employer’s market, you can still find the right balance between your work and your life. The best way to do this is to find a job that you can be passionate about.

This is not as hard as it appears. You only need to spend some time going over what you truly love to do, and what inspires you when you do it. If you want, make a list of all the things you are passionate about. Most people have one or two things that they absolutely adore, then a whole slew of interests that spread out from there.

When you’re done making this list, brainstorm on jobs that are related to what you love. Be bold. Do you really want to spend the next 40 years of your life slogging away at a job you don’t like? If you think the money will make it worth it, be assured that it doesn’t work that way.

One, money is not what makes people happy. Two, if you are stuck in a job that you can’t stand, you most likely will not be delivering the energy or performance that the people at the top of that industry do. That means you won’t get to the top and grab the fat paychecks to begin with.

Go back to your list and study it. Be honest with yourself. Pick out what you would love to do for the next 40 years. That’s how you will wind up not being a slave to your job.

Hours Are Different When You Love What You Do

Loving what you do frees you from having to count the hours until you get to be yourself. That’s what many people do with their jobs, and while you can choose to do that too, you probably don’t want to.

Passion makes work not seem like work. Ask anyone who loves what they do for a living. Chances are many of them work far more than the traditional 40 hour workweek. However, it rarely feels that way to them. That’s how important loving what you do for a living really is.
