Teenagers are frequently looking for some extra bucks and something to do with your time. It’s important for teens to have their own spending money, as well as their own money to save and give to charities of their choice. There are plenty of summer jobs, part time jobs and internships available for teens, and the experience gained at these jobs could lead to greater things in the future.
There are some regulations for teenage workers that should be kept in mind. During the school years, those aged 14 and 15 are limited to three hours of work a day and 18 hours a week. Teens who are 16 and 17 don’t have a limit on hours, but may not wot work in a job that the Labor Department considers hazardous. Teenagers who are over 18 may, of course, work any job for any amount of time. Some states also require working papers for teenagers under 18.
Popular jobs for teenagers offer a lot in terms of range in skill, time and talent. Fast food jobs are one of the most common jobs that teens get. The teenager will cook the food, clean, take orders from customers or work at the cash register.
Movie theaters are also a popular place for teens to work, either selling movie tickets, selling snacks, sweeping and cleaning or working as ushers.
Babysitting is a great way to earn money and can be a ton of fun for those who like little kids. Office jobs, retail jobs, lifeguard jobs and local public libraries often hire teenagers, as well.
When going for the job, remember to be courteous, honest and keep a good eye out for spelling and grammar on any resume, cover letter or other documents you hand in to your potential employer. During an interview, it’s best to arrive a few minutes early, dress as best as you can and answer questions thoughtfully and thoroughly. Also, thank the interviewer for his or her time, and follow up a day or two after the interview.
There are also lots of resources online for teenagers who are job hunting. Landing a first job can be difficult, especially for teens, so research, persistence and patient are important qualities to have. Volunteering is also a wonderful way to gain experience. It can be a challenge to balance school and work, so try to choose a job with flexible hours.
