Too Young For This Job

People at the end of their careers often complain of age discrimination, but it goes both ways. Recent college graduates can sometimes be considered “too young for this job.” Youthful job applicants can improve their chances for employment, however, with a few subtle tricks.
The very idea that an employer might reject an applicant as too young is ridiculous. Just because you don’t have years of experience doesn’t mean you aren’t right for the job, but some employers are convinced that every young person is lacking in experience. Others fear that youngsters will be undependable. It is up to the applicant to convince employers that he or she is mature beyond a chronological age, and worthy of consideration.
Don’t Act Your Age
The job interview is no time to act cool. Wear an outfit that makes you look older than you are, even if it doesn’t appeal to your personal sense of style. Stick to colors that are neutral or dark, and make sure clothes and shoes are in good repair and fit well. Women should be careful to cover chest and upper legs, and to wear light makeup and little jewelry. Project a conservative look to help the employer see you as a serious candidate for the job.
Brush Up Your Resume
Have a good, long look at your resume to be sure it will present you in your best light. Some applicants actually revise their resume for each individual job interview so that it is focused squarely on the requirements for the position. Lastly, ask someone you trust to proof it and suggest any improvements you should consider. That kind of attention to detail can give the impression of maturity to a potential employer.
Make Yourself Available
Be available when the call comes for a follow-up interview or for an offer of employment. If you really want that job, you really need to be available when they call and not be coy. Keep your cell phone with you at all times, and return any missed calls as soon as possible. Being easily accessible tells the employer you are a mature adult who will be responsive to his or her immediate needs.
Conclusion
It’s not enough to act like a mature adult just because you are looking for a job. Once you enter your career field, it’s time to grow up for good. Foster a grown-up attitude, and watch your career continue to blossom and thrive.
