Working overtime: Pros and cons

There are several pros and cons associated with working overtime. For one, working overtime can secure additional income in this trying time. As the current fiscal crisis ensues, a number of employees are working overtime just to make ends meet. While 40-hour workweeks are tough on their own, working an additional 20 hours may seem brutal. This, however, is a great way to earn additional money, while showcasing your dedication and skills. In fact, the latter is what most bosses and managers look for. While working overtime is not mandatory, several companies do offer this option for employees and staff. Not only does it help employees elevate revenue, it also shows their commitment to hard work and excellence in all endeavors. Over the years, overtime employees have seen pay raises, bonuses and even extended vacations from their bosses.
While is seems like a daunting task, working overtime also offers a sense of true achievement. In fact, many employees work seriously late hours during overtime shifts. This requires little to no supervision and a great deal of responsibility as well. While the managers and bosses are long gone, overtime workers are burning the midnight oil on a myriad of projects. In fact, some have even slept in their offices overnight just to ensure timely deliverables. This type of dedication will certainly see a wealth of benefits in the long run. Working overtime not only shows your desire, it also shows your passion for working hard. Whether it is 60 or 65 hours, employees can make a lot of money by working extra hours. This can lead to promotions, along with new opportunities in the near future.
While working overtimes has its pros, there are several cons as well. For employees with families, working overtime can severely limit family time and social activities. Since overtime employees are usually at the office, chances are they will miss their favorite shows or movies. While this may seem unfair, it simply depends on the employee. If earning additional money is a must, then employees must curtail their social activities. If, however, they are content with their current earnings, then there really is no need to work overtime. Most bosses, however, will request employees to stay after hours. In these cases, the employees must abide by these wishes. Whether they like it or not, declining a specific overtime request may place their jobs in jeopardy. While employers may seem tough, they do understand their workers have lives as well. As a result, bosses may offer more vacation days or even let some employees take multiple days off.
Working overtime has its benefits and drawbacks. While the work is truly time-consuming, it does pay off at the end. Again, it simply depends on the employee and how far he or she wishes to advance within the company. Some overtime opportunities are optional, however, some may be compulsory. In these cases, employees will have to work extra hours to secure their jobs in this challenging and diverse market.
